Winemaker
Jamey Whetstone became winemaker for Jocelyn Lonen Winery in 2004.
He started his winegrowing career in the vineyards at Turley
Wine Cellars in 1998. His energy, devotion and hard work were
soon recognized and he was promoted to the position of assistant
winemaker under Ehren Jordan.
During the summer of 2001, Jamey worked in France at the prestigious
Burgundian estate, Domain Dujac, in order to gain winemaking
perspective at an historic, “world class” winery.
As Jamey’s winemaking skills developed, he started his
own label - Whetstone Cellars - and began consulting for various
Napa Valley wineries including Ristow, Constant and Temple.
Jamey’s background and experience give him a broad perspective
which encompasses all aspects from the cultivation of the
vine all the way through to the bottling of the wine. He is
dedicated to assuring that all viticultural practices enhance
the fruit so that the wines have great extraction of fruit
and flavor.
Jamey is well-versed in viticultural practices used to maximize
grape quality including the removal of lateral shoots to provide
aeration and sunlight, dropping fruit for intensity and concentration
of flavors and, in general, assuring that the grapes are farmed
to reach their full potential. His primary winemaking goal
is to showcase each individual vineyard lot to accentuate
its unique regional characteristics. All vineyard lots are
kept separate so that Jamey can follow the progress of each
wine and make the best possible blends. Jamey has a great
passion for life and he loves vineyards, wine and the whole
business of winemaking.
